Game Recap:
The Philadelphia Union drew in a tight matchup against Inter Miami CF, with an exhilarating score of 0-0. It was an absolute shot-firing fest for both sides, mainly the Union, racking up 20 shots with just about half of them being on-frame, and Miami coming away with nine shots total. Both sides of the pitch saw the ball equally, about, with Miami picking up the majority with 56% possession. Saying that this game was hard fought is an understatement, with the game total accumulating 18 fouls, as well as two yellow cards being handed out. Seemed as though the Union could not get a break from Inter Miami’s goalkeeper, Drake Callender, who shut down Philadelphia’s attacking forces with eight saves.
Standout Players:
A shorthanded Union side seemed to put together an orderly performance and give us fans a solid outing. Daniel Gazdag gets my player of the match, he ruled the tempo of the game for the Union and, out of both sides, had the best and closest chance to score. Kai Wagner also put on a decent defensive display, although could have been more effective when attacking. Stuart Findlay had a good performance after seeing very limited minutes this year, came into this game as a starter and seemed to do a great job adjusting to the style of play the Union have to offer, could be a potential aerial threat on set pieces down the road. Jakob Glesnes with another superb showcase last night, held down the back line and still obtained the rocket of a foot by just barely missing from long range. I would say these players were the standouts for the Union from last night and I expect for, not just these boys but, everyone else to step up their game in their next fixture.
Ending Thoughts:
I would say this game sought to be ‘very average’, with no top-drawer displays or incredible goals, but I would not think the Union would be worried one bit. Philly sits at the top of the Eastern Conference in the MLS with 21 points in 12 matches so far this year. The Union next face off is against the Portland Timbers this Sunday (May 22nd) at 10pm EST. I do not see any reason why the Union will lose this game, with Portland being in subpar form and Philly cruising along so far.
